Kendo with John Drakey

  • Tuesday, April 28, 2015
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Loose Park Garden Center, 5200 Pennsylvania (Wornall), KCMO

Come join us as JAS member John Drakey, Sensei at the Kansas City Kendo Club, shares his knowledge of and great enthusiasm for kendo, a Japanese martial art. John will be going over the basics of Kendo from techniques and equipment to etiquette, and philosophy. A training dummy will also be provided for guests to make practice hits with a Shinai.

Presenter's Bio: John has been practicing Kendo for over 24 years.  He stated here in the Kansas City area and continued studying while living in Noboribetsu, Japan from 1995 to 1998.

John started earning ranks through the All Japan Kendo Federation ( 1Kyu, 1Dan, 2Dan). After returning to Kansas City, he found a group practicing at Ft. Leavenworth being taught by member of the Japan Self Defense Force. Eventually, John took over the teaching when the original instructor was transferred back to Japan.

After the events of September 11, 2001, John had to find a new place to teach and practice, so he went back to his original "Aozora Dojo" roots in Kansas City.

John's group practices outside all year around. The Kansas City Kendo Club has become a member of the Mid West Kendo Federation and also part of the All US Kendo Federation.  John is currently a Sandan (3rd Dan) and is working on achieving 4Dan.

There is no cost for this program. You don't have to be a member to attend our general meetings. Friends and family are welcome!
